Implementation of the National Action Plan for Great Snipe in Poland - stage 1
History of the ProjectGreat snipe is one of the most endangered wader birds in Poland. Its protection requires a long-term strategy and is delivered on many levels, e.g. through agri-environmental programs, national monitoring scheme or targeted projects. Most of the great snipe sites are located within Natura 2000 areas and national parks, however its population is showing a downward trend, which indicates the need for targeted active protection and this in turn requires financial input and coordination. The first major great snipe project in Poland “Active protection of great snipe in the Upper Narew River Valley Natura 2000 site” (LIFE11 NAT / PL / 436) was implemented by the Polish Society for the Protection of Birds and Natura International Polska. As part of this project, the National Action Plan was created and approved by the Ministry. The aim of the current project is to implement actions scheduled for the first stage (five years) of the Action Plan.
