We are promoting conservation of great snipe amongst farmers and the public
Great snipe needs comprehensive conservation solutions with the involvement of state institutions and NGOs, but also - and perhaps above all - farmers who manage their nesting sites. The great snipe habitats were secondarily created by meadow management, but with the progress of mechanization and drainage, the great snipe became a victim of the ecological trap. Some meadows are also overgrown because of the lack of interest in agriculture among younger generations. The solution to this situation is a cooperation of non-governmental organisations that have funds to restore abandoned meadows with farmers who farm in neighbouring areas. The aim of this cooperation is to adapt the land use over at least one square kilometre to the optimal management model.
Cooperation with farmers
The aim of this action will be to implement appropriate models of land use in permanent lek areas and cooperation with farmers to encourage them to undertake suitable agri-environmental programmes. This work will consist in assessing the current use within the lek area and cooperating with farmers and farming experts to adapt their land use to the appropriate management model. First of all, current aerial habitat maps will be created using photographs taken by drones. Based on these maps, plots will be selected where a change in farming practices would be beneficial for great snipe. Subsequently, regional coordinators will engage in dialogue and assist farmers who will be interested in farming under agri-environmental programs that promote great snipe conservation.
The cost of this action includes mostly personnel and travel to reach and cooperate with farmers, as well as equipment and processing habitat maps. The total cost of the task is 307,000 PLN, of which we are looking for co-funding of 52,000 PLN. |
Promotion of the project amongst the general public
The last but equally important element of the great snipe conservation in Poland is informing the public about the need to protect this species, its threats and the role of protected areas, agri-environmental programmes and specific projects in maintaining this species in Poland. We plan a number of media campaigns in traditional media and on social media sites. At the local level, information boards will be designed and promotional materials such as project t-shirts, calendars, posters and brochures will be distributed.
The total cost of the task is 153,000 zł, which includes staff costs, design and production of promotional materials. We are looking for co-funding for these activities at the level of 26,000 zł.
