NATIONAL ACTION PLAN FOR GREAT SNIPE |
The downward trend of the great snipe population in Poland was already noticed at the end of the 19thcentury and continues to this day with the current estimation of 400-550 males. Although the great snipe has been taken under protection and it is not hunted anymore, adverse habitat changes have caused its further decline. Unfortunately, along with climate change, we expect further degradation of its habitats and to be honest, the next two decades will be decisive for the preservation of this species and other waders in Poland. We are out of time - we cannot postpone the protection of the great snipe for another year - we must act now and together.

In response to the drastic population decline, the National Action Plan for Great Snipe was developed and approved by the Ministry of the Environment in 2017. This document consolidated the existing knowledge about the species and set the course of action for the next ten years. While passive site protection or systematic solutions such as agri-environmental programs are very important, they are not enough to sustain the species. Active protection of the areas around the most important sites is needed, and this requires high financial outlays.
The aim of this project is to implement the activities planned for the first five years of the Action Plan. |
